Purdue’s Zach Edey named Heat Check CBB’s national player of the year for second consecutive season.
The Heat Check CBB staff has unveiled its consensus national men’s college basketball awards for the 2023-24 season.
Purdue’s Zach Edey was named Heat Check CBB’s national player of the year for the second consecutive season, averaging 24.1 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game for the Boilermakers.
Nineteen total players received at least one vote for a Heat Check CBB All-America team, with Edey and Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht receiving unanimous first-team votes.
Coach of the Year voting was highly contested. South Carolina’s Lamont Paris earned Heat Check CBB’s honors after guiding the Gamecocks to a second-place tie in the SEC after being picked to finish last in the media’s preseason poll. Four other coaches also received votes.
Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle earned First-Year Coach of the Year honors by leading the Aggies to a Mountain West regular season championship with zero returning players and a ninth-place prognostication in the conference’s preseason poll. Two other coaches also received votes.
Freshman of the Year honors were shared by Kentucky teammates Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham. The duo combined to average over 27 points per game for the Wildcats this season coming off Kentucky’s bench.
Finally, Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht was a unanimous selection for Transfer of the Year. The former Northern Colorado guard recorded a career-high 21.4 points and made 40.5 percent of his 3-point attempts for the first-place Volunteers.
