Brian Shaw named G League Select coach
According to reports on Monday, Brian Shaw has been named head coach of the new NBA G League Select program. Shaw is an NBA coaching veteran, having led the Nuggets as head coach from 2013 to 2015 while also making assistant stops with the Pacers and Lakers.
Shaw is now tasked with ushering in the new pathway for prospects to develop and ready themselves for the pro level. The G League Select team will scrimmage against other G League teams during the circuit and do additional training. Some of the nation’s top recruits out of the 2020 class — including potential lottery pick Jalen Green — will participate in the program.
Both Gach narrows list
Former Utah wing Both Gach is one of the final big names on the transfer market (at least for now) and is narrowing in on his new home. Gach is a 6-6, 183-pounder who chose to transfer from the Utes after withdrawing from the NBA Draft.
Maryland, Creighton, Iowa State, Auburn and Minnesota are the final five teams in the running for Gach, who averaged 10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this past season. He will likely be forced to sit out the ’20-21 season before returning to play his final two seasons of eligbility.
Frank Anselem nearing decision
Four teams remain for Frank Anselem, a 6-10, 210-pound center. The Napa, Calif., product was originally set to be a member of the 2021 class before reclassifying to 2020. He will decide on Wednesday between Georgia, New Mexico, San Diego State and Syracuse.
According to 24/7 Sports, Anselem is an “athletic center with a high upside due to his significant physical tools.” Three of Anselem’s final four teams have lost key frontcourt members this offseason, including Georgia’s Rayshaun Hammonds (12.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg) turning pro, New Mexico’s Vance Jackson (11.1 ppg) transferring, and San Diego State’s Yanni Wetzell (11.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg) graduating.
