Thursday’s college basketball highlights
Thursday’s Disaster Index
Georgetown had a valiant effort Thursday night vs. San Diego State but folded when it mattered most. An Aminu Mohamed layup cut the SDSU lead to 57-53 with 9:39 remaining. From that point on, the Hoyas failed to make another field goal. The Aztecs went on a 16-3 run the rest of the way as Georgetown suffered a challenging loss in the Wooden Legacy.
Friday’s Bracketology Watch
Iona secured the win of the day, recording the MAAC’s first-ever win vs. a top-10 opponent as it shocked No. 10 Alabama in the ESPN Events Invitational. Rick Pitino’s Gaels, now 6-0 with a signature win, are creeping into the at-large discussion with their explosive start to the season. Iona takes on Belmont on Friday and then either Dayton or No. 4 Kansas on Sunday. From there, Iona should be favored in every remaining game except a Dec. 18 date vs. Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden.

Friday’s college basketball best bets
Betting odds courtesy of FanDuel.
Wager: $10.00
To Win: $89.39
Season ROI: -23.0% ($140.00 wagered for $107.76 earned)
UConn vs. VCU (`:30 p.m. ET; ESPN2)
—SPREAD; -8.5: UConn has a “get-right” opportunity against a shaky VCU squad. So long as the Huskies aren’t depleted from their last two games, this should be an easy one.
Alabama vs. Drake (4:30 p.m. ET; ESPNU)
—SPREAD; -6.5: Alabama should come out wth a vengeance after the stunning loss to Iona on Thursday. Look for the Tide to rack up points against the Bulldogs.
Auburn vs. Syracuse (4:30 p.m. ET; ESPN2)
—MONEYLINE; -250: Syracuse has become hit-or-miss based on its perimeter shooting. Against a team with length like Auburn, don’t expect an easy time for the Orange.
San Diego State vs. USC (11:30 p.m. ET; ESPN2)
—MONEYLINE; -110: SDSU takes on USC for the Wooden Legacy title late Friday night, and Lamont Butler could give Boogie Ellis fits if he plays like he did Thursday defensively.
