Mountain West Basketball: Season Preview 2020-21

Mountain West stars to watch

matt mitchell, san diego state

The Aztecs forward has every reason to enter his senior year with an edge. A potentially historic season was cut short by COVID-19, and now SDSU has largely fallen out of the consensus preseason Top 25 due to offseason departures.

Appearing alongside Malachi Flynn, Devin Watson, Jalen McDaniels and Trey Kell in his career, Mitchell has typically played the role of the formidable sidekick rather than the go-to guy. Even though Northridge transfer Terrell Gomez has the most experience as a scorer, Mitchell is most complete player on the Aztecs roster. His efficiency and patience have improved and defense is now his calling card. Mitchell is ready to take the next step.

neemias queta, utah state

Utah State’s big man could have easily left for the pros after his freshman season. Now back for Year 3, Queta will be aiming for the postseason while simultaneously hoping to impress draft scouts.

The Portuguese product has plenty in his repertoire. He is one of the country’s elite rim protectors and anchors Utah State’s stout rebounding efforts. On the offensive end, Queta is remarkably challenging to stop on the low block with his length and power. Because he draws so much attention in the paint, Queta has shown a steady improvement in vision and passing ability.
