The DPI Gradebook: College Basketball Analytics, Simplified

Welcome to the DPI Gradebook presented by Heat Check CBB! I am extremely excited to partner my analytics system, the Dieckhoff Power Index, with the rest of the stellar coverage here at Heat Check. I hope you will be, too.

As the new resident “stats guy” around here, allow me introduce myself. Whether you’ve been following the Dieckhoff Power Index for a while now or this is the first you’re hearing of it, I think everyone is best served if we start out with rundown of the background and methodology behind the system, as some items may have shifted during takeoff.

First things first, though: A huge thank you to my father, Mark, whose expertise and support has made this whole thing possible. As always, this is dedicated to you.

Second: For all the help my father has given me, he also gave me a surname that’s rife for misspellings and mispronunciations. So, to make everyone’s lives a little easier, let’s just refer to this as “the DPI” from here on out, shall we?

(For the record, it’s DEE-koff.)

A Degenerate Youth

The DPI started as a get-rich-quick scheme hatched by a very naïve middle schooler. During my childhood, my father ran his office bracket pool and inspired me to start my own circle of degenerates at Western View Middle. After finishing well out of the money in Year 1, I set out to try to crack the mysteries of March Madness – but my only true skill at the time was that I was better than my classmates at using Microsoft Excel.

I forced my dad to explain to me how the NCAA Tournament field is selected, and upon learning how easy it was to calculate the now-defunct Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), I decided to figure out if I could replicate it. Now, it might be difficult to conceive for some of you, but the internet was not always the treasure trove of data that it is today, and I had to manually enter every score of every game for the entire season in order to calculate every team’s RPI.

I quickly realized I needed a system to organize everything.

While replicating the RPI was a fun exercise, it wasn’t getting me any closer to my goal of winning big in March. (Hey, that $10 would have been huge at the time.) I started by adding in ham-fisted adjustments for points per game and scoring margin. It still wasn’t enough to get me paid, though, so I kept feeding new information into the system. Anything I could do to get a little extra edge.

It kept not working. I kept trying to fix it. Rinse and repeat.

By the time I was in high school, this monstrosity I had built was so far removed from the RPI that it needed its own name. Having heard of guys like Sagarin and Pomeroy, I figured you were just supposed to use your own name. The “Dieckhoff RPI” seemed a little too on the nose, and hence, the Dieckhoff Power Index was born.

After graduating high school, most of us in the bracket pool went our separate ways, and suddenly I found myself without the financial impetus to improve the DPI. I would break it out and mess around with it in February of every year, but I wasn’t really committed to making it any better.

So, there it sat, collecting dust.

Sure, Call it a Comeback

A few years later, for reasons that remain unclear, I decided to give it another go. And not just to use the DPI as a secret tool for my own devices, but as something I could share publicly. To that end, I started a blog where I would post rankings and do write-ups for an audience of no more than five people. I’ve never been the best at self-promotion, and to make matters worse, I severely miscalculated how useful a Twitter account could be in 2012.

Thankfully, the DPI received a completely unexpected boost the following year when a former high school classmate contacted me out of the blue. Adam, who was working for NPR at the time, was doing a story on March Madness predictions and wanted to interview me for the piece. What I failed to realize at the time was that he was doing a radio story, and I only found out that it had aired when one of my professors mentioned it to me before class. (It’s still up, by the way.)

This brush with fame – however brief and insignificant – was enough motivation for me to continue with the DPI. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to give it the full attention it deserved as I was finishing up my undergraduate degree, and I had even less time when I back for graduate school. And so yet again, it went dormant.

In 2017, after finishing my master’s degree, I joined the Peace Corps and moved to China for two years. Despite the horrendous time difference and various issues with internet access, I found myself with a lot of free time to devote to the DPI. On a 30-hour train ride from Beijing to Guizhou, I re-read Dean Oliver’s Basketball on Paper and became inspired with a flood of new ideas for the system.

Following a vast overhaul of the DPI, I was ready to go public again. I even fired up the old Twitter machine, only to discover that an entire college basketball community was thriving there. I dove in with both feet, made a few choice friends along the way, and here we are.

Before we get into the methodology portion of the program, I want to make a few things abundantly clear:

  • The DPI is descriptive, not predictive. All of the numbers in the DPI are reflective only of the games that have actually been played; none of the calculations include predictions about future performance. Therefore, the DPI cannot generate preseason projections. In a typical season, the first rankings are usually released around Thanksgiving. This year, the first release will probably happen right around the New Year, pandemic permitting.
  • This is not the be-all-end-all of statistics. That’s because there isn’t one. Surely, I believe that the DPI offers some important insights into the game, but the numbers reflected here should not be taken as gospel. There is no single metric that perfectly captures everything that happens on and off the court, and anyone pretending otherwise is a snake oil salesman. What the DPI does offer is a unique perspective on how to measure team quality. Use responsibly.

With all that out of the way, let’s talk more about what the system is actually capturing.

Methodology & Terminology

The DPI measures team quality by looking at overall performance on both sides of the ball and adjusting everything for opponent strength – and that’s pretty much it. There’s obviously a lot more going on behind the scenes than that, but at the heart of it, the goal of the DPI is to answer a simple question:

Is Team A good at XYZ?

That’s the whole goal of analytics, right? To find patterns in data to answer our burning questions? The DPI simplifies that process by distilling all the raw numbers and adjustments into a recognizable grading system that serves as a quick reference guide to how well your favorite team is performing on the court relative to who they’ve played.

More than that, though, the DPI offers a few tweaks to the conventional wisdom surrounding basketball analytics. The system builds off of the groundwork laid by Dean Oliver and Ken Pomeroy, combining a focus on scoring efficiency with performance in the so-called “four factor” statistics that impact the game: shooting, turnovers, rebounding, and free throws. Importantly, the DPI also adjusts the “four factor” ratings for opponent quality just like scoring efficiency is adjusted. Generally speaking, most data sources report raw four-factor stats without accounting for strength of opponent.

Another notable feature of the DPI is how offensive free throw rate is calculated. Typically, this number is used to describe how often a team gets to the free throw line. But taking that a step further, if we agree that getting to the free throw line is valuable — well, the free throws are really only valuable if you actually make them. Since that is largely within a team’s control, free throw percentage is taken into account when measuring a team’s offensive free throw rate in the DPI. We’ll call the resulting number a team’s “effective free throw rate”. This adjustment is not made on the defensive side, though, so teams are not rewarded for getting bailed out at the line by their opponents.

Because of the scaling system (and my past life as a teacher), the DPI uses “grades” as its units of measurement, and there are 12 categories in total that make up the DPI Gradebook. Each aspect of a team’s performance is measured on a 100-point scale, with corresponding letter grades to match. Most of the grades in the system are curved so that the best-performing team in a given stat is automatically awarded the maximum score of 99.9*.

(We don’t believe in perfection at the DPI, so we don’t actually give out 100s. Deal with it.)

The central, holistic grade for overall team quality is the DPI Grade. This cumulative grade, which is not curved, is taken as the average of a team’s Offense (OFF), Defense (DEF), and Four Factor (4F) Grades. The OFF and DEF Grades are based on adjusted scoring efficiency and four-factor performance on each respective side of the ball. The 4F Grade weights team performance on both sides of the ball, giving an overview of how much a team helps itself in areas other than just scoring points. Grades are also given for team performance in each of the component four factor stats – effective field goal rate (EFG), turnover rate (TOV), offensive rebound rate (ORB), and free throw rate (FTR).

To summarize, the 12 metrics that comprise the DPI Gradebook are:

  • DPI Grade – measures overall team quality via OFF, DEF, and 4F Grades
  • OFF Grade – measures offense quality via adj. offensive efficiency & 4-factors
  • DEF Grade – measures defense quality via adj. defensive efficiency & 4-factors
  • 4F Grade – measures team quality via weighted offensive/defensive 4-factors
  • oEFG Grade – measures ability to shoot efficiently via team effective FG rate
  • oTOV Grade – measures ability to take care of the ball via team turnover rate
  • oORB Grade – measures ability to create 2nd chances via team off. reb. rate
  • oFTR Grade – measures ability to get to the line & convert via effective FT rate
  • dEFG Grade – measures ability to defend efficiently via opp. effective FG rate
  • dTOV Grade – measures ability to take away the ball via opp. turnover rate
  • dORB Grade – measures ability to prevent 2nd chances via opp. off. reb. rate
  • dFTR Grade – measures ability to prevent trips to the line via opp. FT rate
