A Snapchat video has led to the postponement of Monday’s matchup between Miami and North Carolina.
Monday night’s ACC contest between Miami and North Carolina has been postponed after two Tar Heels stars were seen without masks celebrating Saturday’s win over Duke.
The video, which includes UNC players Day’Ron Sharpe and Armando Bacot, was captured on Snapchat and later obtained by The Daily Tar Heel.
Here’s a report from Stadium’s Jeff Goodman about the incident:
“The postponement follows a meeting of personnel from both schools, who mutually concluded the game could not move forward today,” the ACC said in an official statement about the game’s postponement.
University of North Carolina chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz advised Tar Heel fans to not celebrate the Duke victory in public areas due to the pandemic.
Against Guskiewiciz’s hopes, hundreds of UNC fans were still seen celebrating on Franklin Street shortly after North Carolina beat Duke 91-87 to improve to 12-6 on the season.
Though it’s unclear yet if the gathering that included Sharpe and Bacot has actually led to positive COVID-19 tests within the program, Miami’s concerns about the possibility of infection was enough to lead to the postponement. Neither program mentioned COVID-19 positive tests or tracing issues in their announcements.
UNC AD Bubba Cunningham issued the following statement shortly after the news:
The 7 p.m. tip was slated for ESPN with Sean McDonough and Jay Bilas on the call.
